Manu Peruvian Jungle 4days / 3nights

MANU NATIONAL PARK RESERVE CENTER

Nowhere is amazing diversity more evident than in the tropical and temperate forests and associated habitats of the Reserva Biosfera de Manu (hereafter called Manu Biosphere Reserve, the name by which most birders know it) in the southeast of Peru.  The Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of nearly 1.9 million ha, comprised of the Manu National Park, associated multiple‑use zones and native community lands. Manu lies on the eastern slope of the Andes and protects almost the entire watershed of the Manu River and most tributaries of the Alto Madre de Díos River. The reserve encompasses a vast range of altitudinal zones and habitat types, peaking at more than 4,000 m in the high, cold Andes, and descending to hot, humid lowland Amazonian forests at 350 m. Up to ten types of lowland forest have been identified in this part of the south‑west Amazon, and these can be further subdivided into many distinctive microhabitats. This biological wealth is also evident at the species level. Some 300 species of tree are often crammed into a single hectare of lowland forest. More than 1,300 butterfly species have been recorded in one area of Manu (Pakitza). During a typical tour, wildlife‑watchers encounter at least eight species of primate, enjoy the South American Tapir (Tapirus terrestris) and other mammals by night at clay‑licks, bump into a family of giant otters (Pteronura brasilensis) on an oxbow lake, and frequently see jaguar (Panthera onca) along rivers. But it is the avian diversity that tends to enthrall most visitors to Manu. The total of 1,020 recorded species is not only higher than that of any other protected area in the world, but also eclipses that of many entire countries (even popular birding destinations such as Costa Rica). Moreover, two‑thirds of the reserve remains unexplored; many additional bird species and, remarkably, uncontacted indigenous tribes are likely to inhabit these remote areas.

TOUR ITINERARY

Manu Peruvian Jungle 4 days / 3 nights:

TOUR DAY 1:

Travel Cloud Forest  Pilcopata Lodge  to Manu Peruvian Jungle

We leave Cusco early in the morning to start our adventure! First, we are taken by private transportation to a place called Ninamarca to observe pre-Incan “chullpas” (tombs) of the Lupaca culture. Then, we continue to Paucartambo, a colonial town with narrow streets and a beautiful church, where people still keep their old customs. Later, we ascend to Acjanaco Pass (3,550 masl), considered an entrance to Manu National Park, and then we will arrive at the viewpoint Tres Cruces de Oro (3,700 masl) to watch one of the best sunrises of the world! From there, we start descending to the edge of the Manu Jungle, passing first an elfin forest and then a cloud forest where we can view the cock of the rock (the Peruvian national bird), hummingbirds, strikingly-colored quetzals, trogons, spotted flycatchers, and woolly monkeys. In terms of flora, we can view a variety of orchids, mosses, ferns, etc. Finally, we will arrive in Pilcopata (700 masl) where our first lodge – Tikari Lodge – is located. We can refresh ourselves there with a shower and, after that, we will be served dinner before we go to bed.

TOUR DAY 2:

Travel  Atalaya Port to  Rainforest Lodge – Manu Peruvian Jungle

After breakfast, we continue our journey by private car (one and a half hours) towards Port Atalaya (500 m.a.s.l). There, we board a motorized boat and continue for about half an hour navigating on the Alto Madre de Dios River. Along the rocky riverbanks, we will have great opportunities to observe the river wildlife, such as many birds, turtles and/or sunbathing lizards. In the afternoon, we will reach our next lodge – Rainforest Lodge. Then we will go to explore nearby paths where we can see a great diversity of species, such as tarantulas, ants, butterflies, some monkey species, huge trees, exotic plants, palms, etc. After that, we will return to our lodge to spend the night.
Optional: night walk in the Manu Peruvian Jungle.

TOUR DAY 3:

Travel Rainforest Lodge to Machuwasi Lake – Manu Peruvian Jungle

We wake up very early today after having nice dreams to explore a deeper part of the Peruvian jungle, getting to know its particular flora and fauna! This special place offers you an opportunity to view its endemic species hidden deep within Manu as well as medicinal plants used by local native people to heal various sicknesses!! If we are lucky, we can also spot big animals such as jaguars, pumas, wild boars, capybaras, anteaters, etc. After that, we will return to our lodge for lunch. Then, we have a short break to enjoy a refreshing bath in the river or to just relax in the lodge. In the afternoon, we will go to visit Machuwasi Lake to explore in “remos” (hollowed tree trunks used by natives of the area). This is a perfect way to observe the great diversity of local animal species, such as the prehistoric bird called hoatzin, some caimans, capybaras, or Tocon monkeys (Callicebus oenanthe). Later on, we will return to the lodge to spend the night.
Optional: night walk in Manu Peruvian Jungle

TOUR DAY 4:

Rainforest Lodge – Parrot Clay Lick Back to Atalaya and Cusco

After breakfast, we will board a motor boat and ride for 10 minutes to visit the parrot and macaw clay lick, which is an unforgettable experience! After this activity, we will return to the lodge to eat breakfast. Then we will re-board our boat to start our return trip. Our first stop will be in Port Atalaya, where our private vehicle will await us to take us back to Cusco, where we will arrive between 7 and 7:30 pm.

OUR LODGE IN MANU CULTURE ZONE – MANU NATIONAL PARK

PERUVIAN MANU JUNE 4 days: A mysterious, almost prehistoric landscape is created by the  presence of arborescent ferns. They are true ferns, but grow with the size of small trees. Small ferns are also abundant. Mosses, lichens, and ferns are some of the oldest plants on Earth and, curiously, they all rely on mobile sperm for sexual reproduction. Therefore, rain has to fall to allow the sperm of the plants to move on the wet surfaces of the plant, with the ultimate goal of finding an egg and breeding. Of course this process is inextricably linked to the aqueous origins of these plants in the Peruvian Manu Jungle.

* In many Andean myths, the cloud forest is considered a realm of moral darkness, evil, and betrayal. The foundations of this belief could be due to an Incan legend. According to the legend, the Indians of the lower jungle  climbed through the cloud forest and looted the capital of the Incas of Cusco, not once, but several times in the Peruvian Manu Jungle. Cloud forests support numerous species of plants and animals found in the lowland rainforest, but they also house many endemic species, such as spectacled bear and rooster gall. Of all the tropical ecosystems, the cloud forest is the least studied. In fact, high levels of endemism may be a defining feature of tropical cloud forests. In the tropical Andes, about 40% of bird species are endemic, compared to 19% in the Amazon. New species of endemic birds have obviously been only recently discovered, because some cloud forests are so remote and it can be difficult to access the Peruvian Manu Jungle.

*Obviously, persistent cloud cover results in a significant reduction of sunlight in cloud forests as compared to tropical lowland forests. There is much precipitation in the form of rain for up to 6 years and also for the direct interception of the humidity of the clouds. With cool temperatures and abundant humidity, there is usually low evapotranspiration. In a process called “cloud stripping,” the leaves cause moisture to condense from the clouds. Water forms continuously on plant surfaces and drips to the ground. It is not surprising that the soil is moist and sometimes even waterlogged in Manu Selva Peruana.

*Manu Peruvian Jungle This tour is designed for those who do not own too much time, but the desire to experience the Manu National Park! During the Peruvian Jungle Manu, visiting the Culture Zone of the Manu National Park offers a visit of 3 types of forests: Andean mountain forest, dwarf forest and a cloud forest! This last one is the only place to detect a gallito of the rocks (national bird of Peru) and a mono choro !!. The highest point of the Peruvian Manu Forest reaches 3,600 m and the lowest is only 400 m.a.s.l. Located in the Amazon Basin. In addition, we are given the opportunity to navigate in hollowed tree trunks used by native Amazonian people on Lake Machuwasi!
