Frequently asked questions (FAQs):

MANU NATIONAL PARK RESERVE CENTER

Visiting Manu : Some 5,000 visitors make the trip to Manu each year, roughly 5% being dedicated birders. On a typical 2–3 week trip covering all altitudes, birders accompanied

by experienced leaders regularly record 550–650 species. There is something for everyone at Manu. Some birders start early, finish late and ‘bird until they drop’.

Others come for a relaxed birding holiday, staying at comfortable lodges, visiting macaw licks (called collpas), paddling on oxbow lakes and passing a leisurely morning atop one of

the many canopy towers.

As access is restricted, almost all visitors come on a tour: only authorised operators can take visitors into Manu National Park and all must be accompanied by an official guide.

Granted, almost all Manu bird specialities and much other wildlife can be seen in adjacent areas, but  even these are remote, so access is

really only feasible as part of a tour or if you are sponsored by a lodge or NGO working in the area

 MANU CLOUD FOREST.

The Manu Cloud Forest has altitudes above the clouds like dwarf forests, from Costa Rica to southern Bolivia, an ecosystem of bush land is produced,

it has a humid and cool climate, which throughout the year often sees frost nocturnal Large clumping grasses called tussock grasses with sharp, yellowish leaves, along with a

scattering of terrestrial bromeliads and ferns, are the dominant vegetation in Manu Amazon Peru.

Between beautiful scenery and altitudes between 3,500 and 4,500 m (11,400 – 14,800. ft.) found in the Andes, (which is

normally above the arboreal vegetation), islands of gnarled trees confined to sheltered, rocky slopes can be found.

watch. These groups of trees are dominated by the genus Polylepis,

which occurs in essentially pure stands at higher elevations. Polylepis can also be found in lower elevation cloud forests but usually mixes with other Species.

Polylepis is very drought resistant, in the Manu wild or Amazon Peru with the large trees reaching heights of about 18m 59ft. This type of ecosystem is considered threatened in most of its range in Amazon Peru.

MANU CULTURE ZONE – CLOUD FOREST:

As the lowland rain forest’s humidity rises and cools, the montane rain forest typically becomes shrouded in heavy fog for at least part of each day.

This gives these areas the name cloud forest. Clear morning skies soon give way to dense fog, the clouds that linger from late afternoon until dark and give the forests a cloudy, damp look and feel.

This is the dominant ecosystem along the eastern slope of the Andes within a narrow elevational belt (2,000 to 3,500 m). It is common for Andean cloud forests to begin to replace lowland forests at around 1,200 – 1,500 m.

This is a transition that can sometimes be very abrupt in Amazon Peru in Manu National Park.

A typical cloud forest is lush. It will have a high biomass and obvious abundance of epiphytic orchids, bromeliads, ferns, mosses and lycopods, all of which cover or upholster the branches and trunks of the trees.

While vines are relatively rare, shrubs are often plentiful. There are often two layers of trees, but they are not as tall as in lowland rain forests, with branches 25-30 m tall.

They are normally densely spaced and most of them have gnarled trunks.

The leaves are called sclerophyllous, which means they are small, in the Amazon Peru on Tambopata tours and Lake Sandoval
