Rainforest Wildlife Tour: Manu 7 Days

Day 1: Rainforest Wildlife Tour Manu From  Cusco City – Ninamarka / Pilcopata Lodge

Our adventure begins early in the morning as we leave Cusco by private transport, heading towards the breathtaking cloud forest. This misty ecosystem, perched between 11,000 and 5,000 feet above sea level, forms a lush transition between the towering Andes and the vast Amazon rainforest. A realm of mosses, ferns, orchids, and lichens, this fragile environment is home to diverse wildlife.

Our first stop is Ninamarka, where we explore the fascinating pre-Incan chullpas (tombs) of the Lupaca culture. We then proceed to Paucartambo, a charming colonial town known for its narrow streets and traditional customs. Continuing our ascent, we reach the Tres Cruces viewpoint (3,900m), offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Amazon Basin—weather permitting.

As we descend into Manu National Park, we enter a world teeming with wildlife, including the striking Andean cock-of-the-rock (Peru’s national bird), hummingbirds, quetzals, trogons, spotted flycatchers, and woolly monkeys. Along the way, we marvel at the region’s lush flora, featuring various orchids, mosses, and towering ferns. Day 2:Rainforest Wildlife Tour Manu – Pilcopata Lodge – Atalaya – Boca Manu Lodge

After a hearty breakfast, we embark on a 1.5-hour drive to Atalaya, the main port of Manu National Park (500m). Here, we board a motorized boat for an unforgettable 7-hour journey along the Madre de Dios River.

As we cruise, we have excellent opportunities to spot herons, vultures, kingfishers, egrets, turtles, and some of the 13 monkey species that inhabit Manu. By afternoon, we reach Boca Manu, where we check into our next lodge. Day 3: Rainforest Wildlife Tour Manu to Boca Manu Lodge – Cocha Otorongo (Manu Reserve Center)

Today, we transition to the Manu River, opening up new possibilities for wildlife sightings. As we navigate, we may encounter turtles, white caimans, capybaras, and even jaguars (Panthera onca) resting on riverbanks, surveying their territory.

By afternoon, we arrive at our camp in Otorongo, where an observation tower provides a perfect vantage point for spotting the elusive giant river otters. Day 4:Rainforest Wildlife Tour Manu Visit Cocha Otorongo – Cocha Salvador (Manu Reserved Zone)

We begin the day with a tranquil rowboat excursion on Cocha Salvador, a pristine oxbow lake. This is an excellent opportunity to observe the giant river otters, known for their playful nature and impressive fishing skills. These rare carnivores consume 4-5 kilos of fish daily and are often seen feasting along the lakeside.

Throughout the day, we explore jungle trails, seeking black spider monkeys, red howler monkeys, dusky titi monkeys, saddleback tamarins, and brown capuchins. Other mammals in the area include the giant anteater, South American coati, two-toed sloth, deer, and peccaries. Our guide will introduce us to the rainforest’s medicinal plants, used by indigenous communities for centuries.

After a full day of exploration, we return to our lodge at Otorongo, where showers and toilets are available. A night walk offers another chance to encounter the jungle’s nocturnal creatures.

Day 5:  Manu Biosphere  Macaw Clay Lick and Cocha Otorongo to  Boca Manu Lodge

At dawn, the eerie call of the red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus) signals the start of another incredible day. Today we will get up very early to go see the show of the macaw, parrot and parakeet clay lick, where every morning they will eat this salty clay, which contains mineral salts and is rich in nutrition. Then we will return to our lodge to continue with our activities.

As we begin our return journey along the Manu River, we remain on high alert for turtles, white caimans, capybaras, and possibly jaguars.

Later in the morning, we embark on a slow-paced trek through pristine primary forest, where we encounter giant trees, ayahuasca vines, chestnut trees, edible and medicinal plants, and a variety of insects and mammals. A final visit to Cocha Otorongo allows us one last chance to observe giant otters from the 20-meter observation tower.

By evening, we return to our Boca Manu Lodge, where we settle in for the night, reflecting on the day’s adventures.

Day 6: Boca Manu Lodge  to Macaw Clay Lick – Manu Rainforest Lodge

We will get up very early and prepare to see this very beautiful spectacle, where every morning they pose this time on large clay walls that are on the edge of the river.

Then we will return to our lodge to enjoy our typical breakfast. We continue navigating the  tem Madre de Dios River  keeping an eye out for the diverse wildlife that thrives along its shores.

In the afternoon, we arrive at Manu Rainforest Lodge, where we check into our comfortable rooms. After some rest, we take a guided nature walk around the lodge, learning more about the rainforest’s flora and fauna. Day 7: Rainforest Lodge – Atalaya Port – Cusco

Our last morning in the Amazon begins with an early visit to the Loro Collpa, a natural clay lick where parrots and macaws gather in a vibrant display of color and sound. After this mesmerizing experience, we return to the lodge for breakfast before packing up for our journey back.

We board our boat one last time, navigating the Madre de Dios River toward Atalaya Port, where our private vehicle awaits. As we drive back to Cusco, we take in the final glimpses of this breathtaking landscape, arriving in the city between 6:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
