Day 1: Cusco – Ninamarka – Paucartambo – Tres Cruces – Pilcopata Lodge

Your adventure begins early in Cusco, where you will travel southeast through mountainous landscapes and traditional communities before descending into the cloud forests that connect the Andes with the Amazon.

Archaeological Visit to Ninamarka : Your first stop will be the Ninamarka archaeological complex, known for its ancient chullpas, or stone funerary structures. During your visit, you will learn about the region’s pre-Hispanic history and the cultural significance of these monuments.

Discover the Traditional Town of Paucartambo : You will continue to Paucartambo, a town known for its traditional architecture, balconies, and cultural celebrations. Tres Cruces Viewpoint : If access conditions, timing, and the itinerary allow, you may visit the Tres Cruces viewpoint, located at a high altitude and renowned for its panoramic views over the Amazon Basin. Exploring the Cloud Forest : As you descend toward the Amazonian slopes, the landscape will gradually change. These humid forests are home to orchids, tree ferns, mosses, and a wide variety of bird species.

Day 2: Pilcopata – Puerto Atalaya – Madre de Dios River – Boca Manu Lodge

Amazonian river journey and your first wildlife encounters
After breakfast, you will continue by road to Puerto Atalaya, where you will board a motorized boat to begin your river expedition.
Traveling along the Madre de Dios River, you will enjoy expansive green landscapes, river beaches, and tropical vegetation growing along the banks.
During the journey, your guide will help you identify different bird and animal species that may be found in the area, including:

• Herons and cormorants.

The region is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife.

If the program includes an authorized macaw clay lick and conditions are favorable, you will depart early to observe parrots and macaws in their natural habitat.
Clay licks are places where certain bird species consume clay and other soil materials. Their behavior depends on environmental factors, so activity levels can vary from day to day.

Birds you may encounter in the region include:

• Scarlet macaws.
• Blue-and-yellow macaws.
• Red-and-green macaws.
• Amazonian parrots.
• Parakeets and other parrot species.

For photography enthusiasts, the morning light can provide excellent opportunities to capture vibrant colors, movement, and natural behavior. Binoculars, a camera with a telephoto lens, and clothing suitable for humid conditions are recommended.

You will then continue navigating along the Madre de Dios River, enjoying rainforest landscapes and looking for birds along the riverbanks.
Depending on the schedule and transportation logistics, you will arrive at your designated accommodation, where you can have lunch and rest before exploring the surrounding area again.

This will be an opportunity to enjoy the sounds of the rainforest, admire the Amazonian landscape, and reflect on the experiences of the previous days.
After breakfast, you will begin the river journey back to Puerto Atalaya and continue by road, traveling once again through humid forests and Andean landscapes on your way to Cusco.
