Recommended Season for the Inca Trail: The Inca Trail is open from March to January, closing for the entire month of February for maintenance. However, the best time to do the trek is between April and October, when rainfall is less frequent and the sky is clearer, ideal for enjoying the scenery and taking memorable photos.

Day-by-Day Itinerary of the Classic Inca Trail

Important: Access is limited to 500 people per day, including guides, porters, and cooks. Therefore, it is essential to book 5 to 6 months in advance, especially if you want to travel between May and September, the busiest season.

Day 1: Cusco – Km 82 – Llactapata – Wayllabamba

Your adventure begins with an early departure from Cusco to Kilometer 82. From there, you will start the hike along the Urubamba River, with spectacular views of snow-capped peaks. You will visit the Llactapata archaeological site before arriving at your first camp in Wayllabamba.

Day 2: Wayllabamba – Warmiwañusca Pass – Pacaymayu

This is the most challenging day of the trek, as you will cross the highest pass on the trail: Warmiwañusca or “Dead Woman’s Pass” (4,215 m above sea level). From there, you will descend to the Pacaymayu valley, where you will spend the night.

Day 3: Pacaymayu – Runkurakay – Phuyupatamarca – Wiñayhuayna

A day full of history and incredible landscapes. You will explore ruins such as Runkurakay and Sayacmarca, walk along ancient paved roads, and pass through Inca tunnels. At the end of the day, you will camp in Wiñayhuayna, one of the most beautiful archaeological sites along the trail.

Day 4: Wiñayhuayna – Inti Punku – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Before sunrise, you will depart for the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), from where you will have your first, magical view of Machu Picchu at dawn. After a short descent, you will arrive at the citadel for a guided tour. Later, you will return to Cusco by train and bus.

Why Choose the Inca Trail Over Other Routes: While there are other trekking routes to Machu Picchu, such as the Salkantay Trail, Lares Trail, or the Short Inca Trail, none combine history, nature, and spirituality as perfectly as the Classic Inca Trail. This is the only route that allows you to enter Machu Picchu on foot through the Sun Gate, just as the ancient Incas did.

Recommendations for Travelers

  • Book in advance: daily permits are very limited.
  • Prepare physically: do some practice hikes if you are not used to trekking.
  • Acclimatize in Cusco: spend at least 2 days in the city before starting the trek.
  • Pack only what you need: the agency provides porters for your gear, but you must carry your own daypack.
  • Stay hydrated and protect the environment: respect the park rules and leave no trace.

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu – 4 Days / 3 Nights

One of the Most Famous Hiking Routes in the World

The Classic Inca Trail is more than just a hike — it’s a journey through history, spirituality, and the natural beauty of ancient Peru. Along the route, you’ll visit sacred sites like Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, and Wiñay Wayna before entering Machu Picchu through the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

This route was introduced to the modern world by Hiram Bingham in 1915, who named some of the sites, such as Qorihuayrachina, though the Incas had built them centuries earlier for ceremonial and spiritual purposes.

Phuyupatamarca: “The City Above the Clouds”

One of the most magical sites on the Inca Trail is Phuyupatamarca, whose Quechua name means “The City Above the Clouds.” Explorer Paul Fejos gave it this name after observing how, at night, clouds would descend into the valley, making the ruins appear as if they were floating. At sunrise, the sun’s warmth would lift the mist and reveal the stunning site.

Though its architecture is simple, with stone walls and terraced platforms, the symmetry of its design and interconnected stairways highlight the genius of Inca engineering. This site offers unique valley views and is among the most meditative parts of the trek.

Machu Picchu: More Than a Citadel

While traditionally thought to have been a royal retreat for Inca Pachacútec, newer research suggests that Machu Picchu was likely a ceremonial pilgrimage center, aligned with astronomical cycles and connected to other sacred sites like the Island of the Sun on Lake Titicaca.

Its strategic location, urban design, and link to the Inca Trail reinforce the idea that Machu Picchu was planned with profound spiritual and cosmic significance.
