Frequently Asked Questions About Our Manu National Park Tour

Planning a trip to the Amazon rainforest can raise many questions, especially when traveling to a remote destination such as Manu National Park. Below are answers to the most common questions about luggage, weather, accommodation, food, wildlife, safety, connectivity, and what to expect during your journey.
Where can I leave my luggage?

You can leave luggage that you do not need during the jungle portion of the tour in Cusco, at the location arranged by our team. We recommend taking only the clothing and personal items you need for the Amazon portion of the trip.

A small, lightweight duffel bag or backpack is much easier to manage than a large suitcase during boat transfers and jungle travel.
What time does the tour start?

The tour generally starts early in the morning from Cusco, allowing enough time to travel through the Andes, Paucartambo, and the Cloud Forest on the first day.

The exact pickup time depends on the departure date, your hotel location, and current road conditions. We will confirm your pickup time before departure.
What time do we return to Cusco from the jungle?

This 7-day itinerary does not return directly to Cusco. The tour begins in Cusco and finishes in Puerto Maldonado.

On the final day, we travel from the Amazon toward Puerto Maldonado, arriving at approximately late morning under normal conditions. From Puerto Maldonado, you can arrange an onward flight to Cusco or Lima.

Flights are not included unless specifically stated in your booking.
What is the weather typically like?

The weather changes considerably throughout the journey because the tour crosses several ecological zones.

The first part of the trip in the high Andes can be cold, particularly around the mountain passes. Temperatures become warmer as we descend through the Cloud Forest and into the Amazon lowlands.

In the rainforest, expect warm to very hot temperatures, high humidity, and the possibility of rain. Weather conditions can change quickly, so we recommend bringing lightweight clothing, a waterproof rain poncho, sun protection, and insect protection.
What are the lodges like?

The lodges are designed to provide comfortable accommodation while respecting the remote rainforest environment.

Most lodges offer private rooms with private bathrooms. However, facilities vary depending on the location. In the more remote areas, accommodation is simpler.

At Casa Matsiguenka, bathroom and shower facilities may be shared. Electricity and hot water are available at some lodges, while services can be limited at others.

Travelers should expect a genuine rainforest experience rather than hotel-style facilities.
What is included in the tour?

In general, the tour package includes the services specifically listed in your itinerary and booking confirmation, which may include:

Transportation from Cusco according to the itinerary
River transportation during the Amazon portion of the journey
Jungle lodge accommodation
Meals specified in the itinerary
Professional jungle and wildlife guides
Entrance and park-related fees included in the itinerary
Guided jungle walks
Wildlife observation activities
Oxbow lake excursions
Clay lick visits
Wildlife observation equipment when specified

Because inclusions can vary depending on the selected departure and service level, please check the Inclusions and Exclusions section of your specific tour before booking.
What should I bring into the jungle?

We recommend packing light and bringing practical clothing suitable for hot, humid, and rainy conditions.

Essential items include:

Lightweight, quick-drying clothing
Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers
Waterproof rain poncho or rain jacket
Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots
Sandals or lightweight shoes for the lodge
Wide-brimmed hat or cap
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Insect repellent
Small daypack
Reusable water bottle
Personal toiletries
Personal medications
Flashlight or headlamp
Camera and extra batteries or power bank
Binoculars for wildlife and bird watching
Waterproof bags or dry bags for electronics and important belongings

Avoid bringing unnecessary valuables or excessive luggage.
What shoe size does Peru use?

Peru generally uses European shoe sizing.

If you are purchasing footwear in Peru, check the size conversion carefully because sizing can vary between brands. If you are ordering or purchasing hiking footwear specifically for this trip, we recommend trying the shoes on before the tour.
Are there mosquitoes in Manu?

Yes. Mosquitoes and other biting insects are present in the Amazon rainforest.

We strongly recommend using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves and long trousers, especially during periods when insects are most active. A lightweight, breathable shirt and trousers are ideal for rainforest conditions.
What are the dangers of visiting the jungle?

The Amazon is a remote natural environment, and visitors should take normal precautions.

Potential challenges include intense heat and humidity, insects, rain, slippery or uneven trails, river travel, sun exposure, and long travel days. Wildlife should always be observed from a safe distance and never approached or fed.

Our guides provide instructions about safety, trails, boats, wildlife observation, and local conditions throughout the tour.
Do I need health and travel insurance?

We strongly recommend having comprehensive travel insurance for your trip to Peru and the Amazon.

Your insurance should ideally cover medical expenses, emergency assistance, trip interruption, evacuation, and other risks appropriate to your travel plans.

Travelers should also discuss their individual health requirements and recommended vaccinations or preventive measures with a qualified medical professional before traveling.
How many people are in a group?

Group size can vary depending on the departure date and the type of service booked.

Please contact us for the current maximum group size for your selected departure. Private tours and specialized bird-watching or photography departures may have different group arrangements.
Will we need hiking boots?

Hiking boots are recommended, particularly for rainforest walks where trails may become muddy, wet, or slippery.

Choose comfortable, lightweight footwear with good traction. Waterproof or
