the white egret (Ardea alba), the coconut heron (Ardea cocoi), the rufescent tiger heron, the neotropical cormorani (Phalacrocorax

AMAZON JUNGLE – DELFÍN

The Amazon Jungle River Dolphin averages about 6.5 feet in length. They

come in all shades of pink, from a dull grayish pink to a rosy rose to a bright flamingo pink. This variation is due to the clarity of the water;

The darker the water, the pinker the dolphin will be. The sun’s rays cause dolphins to lose their pink pigmentation.

The cloudy water helps protect the dolphin’s bright hue.

These animals are also known to turn bright pink when excited.

There are several anatomical differences between the Amazon rainforest dolphin and other types of dolphins.

For one thing, Amazon Jungle river dolphins can turn their necks from side to side, while most dolphin species cannot.

This trait, along with the ability to paddle forward with one fin and backward with the other, helps them maneuver when the river floods.

These dolphins will actually swim over flooded land and their flexibility
dad helps them navigate through the trees.

Other characteristics that distinguish them are the molar-shaped teeth that allow them to chew their prey and bristle-shaped hairs on the tips of

their snouts that help them search for food in the muddy bottoms of the Amazon rainforest.

Habitat:

The Amazon Jungle River Dolphin can be found in the Amazon Jungle River system and the Orinoco River system, which flow through Brazil,

Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Colombia, Guyana and Peru.

Diet:

Amazon rainforest dolphins eat more than 50 types of fish, as well as crustaceans found at the bottom of rivers and, occasionally, turtles.
threats

Human activity is the main threat to the Amazon rainforest dolphin. Although these dolphins have long been respected and unharmed due to

the local belief that they have magical powers, these beliefs are changing. Some humans see them as competition and kill them so they don’t have to share the river’s fish.

Dolphins often become entangled in fishermen’s nets and die. Additionally, the construction of hydroelectric dams on South American

rivers, pollution, habitat loss, and declining food sources threaten this species of dolphin unique to this Amazon rainforest.
