The area also serves as a critical habitat for the giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis). According to the Frankfurt Zoological Society, 11 individuals were recorded here in 2022, confirming its importance for conservation and wildlife observation.

Situated on the right bank of the Manu River, in the district and province of Manu (Madre de Dios), Cocha Otorongo forms part of the park’s designated tourist-use area. Originally a meander of the river, it became isolated when the river changed its course over time.

The warm, humid climate sees daytime temperatures of up to 35 °C and nighttime temperatures around 20 °C. With an average water temperature of 29.6 °C, the area supports a thriving Amazonian ecosystem.

Features of the Cocha

Extending approximately 3 kilometers in length and 150–200 meters in width, Cocha Otorongo has an average depth of 1.50 meters. Water visibility reaches 0.63 meters, allowing clear views of aquatic and semi-aquatic species.

This habitat is home to several giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis); five individuals have been recorded, delighting both visitors and researchers.
