Tour Pongo Mainique from Quillabamaba 2 days
In the worldview of Indigenous Amazonian peoples, this sacred site was inhabited by Tasorinchi, their main deity. The Pongo de Mainique is seen as a gateway between the Andes and the Amazon, and also as the threshold that souls cross on their journey to the afterlife.
Crossing it—while witnessing the many waterfalls that plunge straight into the river, as if some mysterious force had suddenly disturbed its calm flow—is something that must be done with deep respect. This is not just a tourist site, but a place of spiritual power, a true Amazonian sanctuary.
In the surroundings of the Pongo de Mainique live many people, including Machiguenga communities, especially from the south. In more remote areas such as the upper Timpía River, there are also Indigenous peoples living in voluntary isolation, such as the Nanty/Kugapakori, who remain without regular contact with the outside world.
