The journey begins near Cusco, with birding at high-altitude wetlands and Andean landscapes, before descending along the famous Manu Road toward the Amazon basin. Along the way, we visit productive birding sites, hummingbird feeders, fruiting stations, bamboo forest, oxbow lakes, and cloud forest habitats. PERU BIRDING
This tour is designed especially for birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, nature lovers, and travelers interested in Peru’s incredible biodiversity. Depending on weather, trail conditions, and wildlife activity, you may encounter endemic Andean species, colorful tanagers, hummingbirds, antpittas, antbirds, toucans, monkeys, and many other Amazonian species.
Day 1: Cusco – Huacarpay Lake – Manu Road – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge
Your Manu Road birding tour from Cusco begins early in the morning as we leave the city and travel toward the highlands.
Our first birding stop is Huacarpay Lake, an important wetland near Cusco and an excellent place to search for high-Andean species. One of our main targets is the endemic Bearded Mountaineer, along with other birds associated with the surrounding wetlands, agricultural areas, and Andean slopes. macaw clay lick tambopata
We continue toward higher elevations, looking for species such as Andean Goose, Andean Lapwing, Mountain Caracara, and Andean Flicker.
As the road begins its spectacular descent, the scenery changes dramatically. The Manu Road crosses several ecological zones, descending from approximately 3,600 meters toward the Amazonian foothills. This dramatic altitudinal transition creates an exceptional variety of habitats for birdwatching and photography.
In the afternoon, we visit a Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where, with favorable conditions, we can observe the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-rock, one of the most iconic birds of the Peruvian cloud forest.

We spend the night at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.

Day 2: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge – Villa Carmen
We begin the morning with birding around Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge, taking advantage of its hummingbird feeders, flowering plants, and fruiting stations.
The lodge is an excellent location for hummingbird photography, with several species regularly visiting the feeders and gardens. Possible sightings include:
- Violet-fronted Brilliant
- Many-spotted Hummingbird
- Speckled Hummingbird
- Fawn-breasted Brilliant
- Wire-crested Thorntail
- Wedge-billed Hummingbird
- Buff-tailed Sicklebill
- Peruvian Piedtail
The fruit tables also attract colorful tanagers and other frugivorous birds, creating excellent opportunities for close-range photography.
Birding is not limited to the feeders. The forest surrounding the lodge may also produce encounters with mammals such as Brown Capuchin Monkey, Woolly Monkey, Tayra, and Brown Agouti.
After lunch, we continue toward Villa Carmen, an important birding location where bamboo forest provides habitat for a number of specialized species.
Depending on conditions and wildlife activity, our targets may include Yellow-billed Nunbird, Pheasant Cuckoo, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Peruvian Recurvebill, Bamboo Antshrike, Dot-winged Antwren, Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher, Ornate Antwren, Manu Antbird, Flammulated Bamboo-Tyrant, Large-headed Flatbill, and White-cheeked Tody-Tyrant.
The combination of bamboo, foothill forest, and surrounding habitats makes Villa Carmen particularly interesting for birders searching for species that can be difficult to find elsewhere.

Day 3: Villa Carmen – Cocha Machu Wasi – Hummingbird Feeders
We dedicate the morning to birding around Villa Carmen, where specialized feeding stations provide additional opportunities to observe and photograph difficult-to-find species.
An Amazonian Antpitta may visit one of the feeding stations, while another station attracts Black-capped Tinamou and other tinamous.
A small pond near the lodge can also be productive for photography, particularly for Hoatzin and Sunbittern.
The surrounding forest supports a variety of mammals, including Red Howler Monkey, Saddle-backed Tamarin, Squirrel Monkey, and Night Monkey.
Later, we travel to Cocha Machu Wasi, a small Amazonian oxbow lake surrounded by rainforest. This tranquil environment provides excellent opportunities to search for aquatic and wetland species.
Possible sightings include:
- Horned Screamer
- Pale-eyed Blackbird
- Black-capped Donacobius
- Sungrebe
- Rufous-sided Crake
Capybaras are also frequently observed around the lake.
If an active Harpy Eagle nest is reported in the area and conditions allow, the itinerary may be adjusted to visit the site. Any additional community or conservation-related entrance fees would be paid locally. PHOTOGRAPHY 10 DAY
Along the route to Cocha Machu Wasi, we also visit productive hummingbird feeding stations. Entrance fees are generally paid locally.
These locations can provide excellent opportunities to photograph species such as Gould’s Jewelfront, Koepcke’s Hermit, Rufous-crested Coquette, Wire-crested Thorntail, Black-breasted Thorntail, White-tipped Sicklebill, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, and Grey-breasted Sabrewing.
Colorful tanagers, including Magpie Tanager and Masked Crimson Tanager, may also appear around the feeding stations and forest edges.

Day 4: Villa Carmen – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge – Wayqecha Cloud Forest
After an early morning birding session around Villa Carmen, we begin our return journey along the Manu Road.
We travel back through the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge area and continue toward the Wayqecha Cloud Forest Biological Station, located at approximately 2,900 meters in the temperate cloud forest zone.
The changing elevation provides another opportunity to observe how bird communities transform as the landscape moves from Amazonian foothills back toward the Andes.
The road between Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge and Wayqecha can be particularly rewarding for birdwatchers, and we will keep our eyes open for species such as the Andean Potoo.
As evening approaches, we search for the Swallow-tailed Nightjar, another fascinating species of the cloud forest. manu birding

Day 5: Wayqecha – Cloud Forest Birding – Cusco
Our final morning begins with birdwatching around Wayqecha, a conservation and research area managed by the Association for the Conservation of the Amazon Basin (ACCA).
The surrounding cloud forest is particularly productive for high-elevation species and mixed-species flocks.
Among our principal targets are the Red-and-White Antpitta and Rufous-capped Thornbill.
The forest can also produce excellent opportunities to photograph colorful tanagers moving through mixed-species flocks, including:
- Hooded Mountain-Tanager
- Masked Flowerpiercer
- Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager
- Streaked Tuftedcheek
- Pearled Treerunner
- And other high-Andean species
Hummingbird feeders near the station can attract Gould’s Inca, while the surrounding forest provides opportunities to search for Scaled Metaltail.
After leaving Wayqecha, we gradually descend toward the Sacred Valley and Cusco, making strategic birding stops along the way. At lower elevations, we continue our search for the endemic Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch and Bearded Mountaineer.
We expect to arrive in Cusco in the afternoon, allowing travelers with late-afternoon or evening flights to continue their onward journey, subject to road and weather conditions.
