Amazonia Peru – Plants in the Cloud Forest Manu Park

mazonia Peru: Plants of the Cloud Forest in Manu National Park

The Amazonia Peru – Plants in the Cloud Forest Manu Park : Plants of the Cloud Forest in Manu National Park,

particularly within the Manu National Park and the Wayqecha Biological Station, is home to a remarkable array of

plant species, including rare bromeliads, orchids, and trees, making it one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the

world. The area’s altitudinal gradient, ranging from 500 to 3,600 meters above sea level, creates diverse

microhabitats, leading to a rich variety of flora across different elevations. Below are summaries of key studies and

findings related to the flora of this unique ecosystem.

1. Bromeliads in the Kosñipata Valley, Cusco -Amazonia Peru: Plants of the Cloud Forest in Manu National Park .

Bromeliads are a diverse group of plants found in the Amazonian cloud forests, ranging from small epiphytic species

to large, terrestrial plants like Puya Raimondi, which can grow up to 3-4 meters. Research at various sampling sites,

including Wayqecha and Acjanaco, found 43 species of bromeliads, categorized into eight genera and three

subfamilies. The subfamily Tillandsioideae was the most abundant, comprising 74.4% of the species. Bromeliads in

this region exhibit a unimodal distribution pattern, with peak diversity between 2,000-2,500 meters above sea level.

New species records were also reported for the Cusco region and Peru.

2. Amazonia Peru: Plants of the Cloud Forest in Manu National Park-  Floristic Diversity of the Tree Layer

The Wayqecha Research Center’s studies on the tree layer highlight the region’s immense biodiversity. At altitudes

ranging from 2,200 to 3,700 meters, the forest is characterized by a mix of primary and secondary forests. Over 159

tree species were identified, belonging to 70 genera and 40 families. Some species, like Symplocos baehni and

Brunellia cuzcoensis, are endemic to the region. Notably, several species face conservation threats, including Cyathea

delgadii and Podocarpus oleifolius.

3. Tree Diversity in Montane Forests

In the Yungas ecoregion, located on the eastern flank of the Andes, montane forests are dense with vegetation and

species. Studies at Wayqecha focused on tree diversity, revealing 68 tree species in a one-hectare plot. These trees

are primarily found in the families Lauraceae, Melastomataceae, and Cunoniaceae. The presence of tree ferns, like

Cyathea caracasana, indicates the high humidity of the area. Five endemic species were reported, including Brunellia

cuzcoensis and Weinmannia microphylla. The soil here is rich in organic matter, providing good nutrients for forest growth.

4. Vascular Epiphyte Communities -Amazonia Peru: Plants of the Cloud Forest in Manu National Park

Epiphytes, particularly orchids, ferns, and members of the Piperaceae, thrive in the humid montane forests of the

Kosñipata Valley. Research identified 270 vascular epiphyte species, with orchids being the most prominent. This

diverse community is supported by “phytophores”—the plants that provide a substrate for epiphytes to grow. These

epiphytes contribute significantly to the overall biodiversity and ecological complexity of the cloud forest.

5. Gesneriaceae Diversity and Floral Morphology

The study of the Gesneriaceae family at Wayqecha has uncovered ten genera and 26 species of these plants, with a

focus on Seemannia sylvatica, an important member of the family. The research examined the floral morphology,

such as corolla length and pistil size, to understand the plant-pollinator interactions. These plants are important for maintaining the floral diversity of the cloud forest.

6. Fungi and Their Ecological Role

Fungi, particularly those belonging to the Basidiomycetes group, play a crucial role in decomposing organic matter in

the cloud forest ecosystem. In the Wayqecha area, research has focused on polypore fungi, which decompose wood,

one of the toughest materials to break down. Eighteen species of polypores were identified along an altitudinal

gradient in the Upper Manu National Park, with peak diversity observed at intermediate elevations (2,720 masl). The

presence of species like Cyclomyces fuscus at all altitudes emphasizes the importance of fungi in the nutrient cycling of the forest.
