Traditional medicine, one of the most important expressions of ancestral memory of the Amazonian peoples, makes use, among other practices, of a large number of plant species to cure their diseases and syndromes.
The Peruvian Amazon flora constitutes one of the largest reserves of phytotherapeutic resources. Indeed, from the first years of the encounter with the Europeans, the healing properties of medicinal plants Peruvians attracted the attention of newcomers. Already in 1649 the Jesuits, in the book «Shedula Romana»,
publish the first report on the “quina” or “cinchona”, (Cinchona officinalis). From this plant are obtained various phenolic alkaloids, including quinine, used for more than
three hundred years to cure malaria.
From those distant years to our days, numerous species have been studied, obtaining from them important biologically assets that have contributed to alleviate the ailments of humanity. Among the latter include the “sangre de Grado” (Croton lechleri) and the “uña de cat» (Uncaria tomentosa), (U. guianensis).
Knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants is based on observation, experience and in-depth knowledge of the environment.
Passed down from generation to generation and enriched by the cultural integration of the native and migrant population, this knowledge has become popular medicine and current herbal medicine.
These knowledge, duly systematized, should contribute to solving, in On the other hand, the health problems of the less favored and more away from modernity, whose chances of being cured are currently limited by the high cost of modern drugs.
