BIRDING JUNGLE – BLACK TINAMOU Tinamus osgoodi -40–46 cm (15 3⁄4 –18 in)

Poorly known. Rare to locally fairly common in humid montane forest, 900–1650 m, on east slope of southern Andes. Large, very dark; note restricted distribution. Gray Tinamou is larger and paler with white freckling on sides of head and throat; elevation range of Gray also does not extend as high. VOICE Song, generally crepuscular, a descending deep whistle, similar to first note of song of White-throated Tinamou. Co, E

GRAY TINAMOU Tinamus tao – 43–46 cm (17–18 in)

Uncommon but widespread, mainly in humid montane forest along east amazon slope of Andes up to 1400 m;locally in terra firme of Amazonia in southeast, especially in hilly terrain. Distinctive combination of large size, blackish head with white freckling behind eyes and on throat, and grayish overall plumage. In south cf. Black Tinamou. VOICE Song, generally crepuscular and given at long intervals, is a low, even “whoo.” Also a single quavering whistle similar to that of Great Tinamou, but not ina series. Co, E, Br, Bo

GREAT TINAMOU Tinamus major * 38–43 cm (15–17 in)

Fairly common throughout Amazonia and (perhaps in the absence of other Tinamus) locally in foothills to 800 m; the most widespread large forest tinamou. Primarily in low-lying, seasonally flooded forest (including varzea in north); also in tall second growth. Note large size, distinctly rufescent head, and unspotted upperparts. Replaced by White-throated Tinamou in terra firme.

VOICE Song, generally crepuscular, a series of rising then falling, quavering whistles, normally inseries of 4. Has “sawing” rhythm. Co, E, Br, Bo

Rare in humid lowland forest, and confined to the north side of the Amazon. Note gray inner remiges and plumes, forming prominent gray “rump” patch. VOICE Song, usually given by several individuals, is a deep booming series of rolling and puttering notes. Calls include a harsh “kak!” and deeper puttering sounds. Co, E, Br

Birding Amazon – Peru Manu Park – PALE-WINGED TRUMPETER Psophia leucoptera * 45–52 cm (17 3 ⁄4 –20 1 ⁄2 in)

Replaces Gray-winged Trumpeter south of the Amazon. Found in humid forest up to 1050 m. Now relatively rare except in less disturbed forest. Easily identified by prominent whitish “rump.” VOICE Song, usually given by several individuals, is a deep booming series of rolling and puttering notes. Calls include a harsh “kak!” and deeper puttering sounds. Br, Bo

Birding Amazon – Peru Manu Park- SUNBITTERN Eurypyga helias * 43–48 cm (17–19 in)

Uncommon but widespread in eastern lowlands (helias; buffier and more heavily barred); rare in foothills and lower slopes of Andes (meridionalis; darker, grayer, less barred, perhaps also with brighter bill and tarsus?), up to 1800 m. Found along streams, rivers, and edges of forest lakes, both on fast-moving, rock-lined streams and sluggish or still water, including pools in forest interior.

Singles or pairs walk sedately along shore (only rarely wading in water), occasionally lunging after prey. Flies with distinctive shallow wingbeats interspersed with short glides, showing off ornate wing pattern; open wings also used in threat display. VOICE Song a melancholy whistle with a “voice crack” near the end, rising in pitch slightly: “hooooEEEE.” Call a decelerating series of growled notes, becoming more hooted toward end. Co, E, Br, Bo

Birding Amazon – Peru Manu Park –   RUFOUS-NECKED WOOD-RAIL Aramides axillaris 29.5–31 cm (11 1 ⁄2–12 1 ⁄4 in)

Found only in extreme northwest, where primarily occurs in mangrove but (less commonly and very locally?) also in evergreen forest up to 900 m. The only wood-rail in northwest. Adult easily recognized by extensively rufous body (with pale gray nape). Immature much browner and duller, but retains reddish remiges and a dull gray nape. VOICE Song duet is a strident series of descending musical notes, the notes of the pair overlapping haphazardly: “CLEW!…CLEW!…CLEW!….”

WHITE-TIPPED SICKLEBILL Eutoxeres aquila * 13.5 cm (51⁄4 in), bill 3 cm (11⁄4 in)

Uncommon in humid forest on east slope of northern Andes, 750–2000 m; continues farther southon outlying ridges. Quiet, inconspicuous. Often clings to flowering plants (especially Heliconia),probing corollas with remarkable bill. Locally overlaps with Buff-tailed Sicklebill; where both occur,1White-tipped may be more common at higher elevations. Rectrices tipped pure white (with no buffor pale rufous); underparts streaked black and white (not dusky and buff). VOICE Song a complex series of thin, whiny squeaks followed by some strident, high, “tseep” notes. Co, E

BUFF-TAILED SICKLEBILL Eutoxeres condamini * 12–13 cm (43⁄4 –5 in), bill 3 cm (11⁄4 in)

Uncommon in humid forest along east slope of Andes and outlying ridges, up to 2800 m; locally into lowland forest at base of foothills. Behavior similar to White-tipped Sicklebill’s. Tips of rectriceswhite, but base always buff or pale rufous. Also has shiny patch of blue-green on sides of neck(lacking in White-tipped). VOICE Song an incessantly repeated series of ringing notes “pling! seetsweet.”Co, E, Bo

Birding Amazon – Peru Manu Park – RUFOUS-BREASTED HERMIT Glaucis hirsutus * 11–12 cm (4–43⁄4 in), bill 2.8–3 cm(131⁄8 in)

Fairly common and widespread in Amazonia, up to 1000 m. Usually in seasonally flooded forests and in second growth; most common in Heliconia thickets near water. Sexes similar; males slightly duskier on throat and grayer on belly. Long curved bill and face pattern recalls Phaethon’s hermits,but note extensive rufous in broad, rounded tail. VOICE Call a series of descending thin notes: “tseetsee tsip-tsit-tsu”; also an up slurred “sweet.” Co, E, Br, Bo

Birding Amazon – Peru Manu Park –  EMERALD TOUCANET Aulacorhynchus prasinus * 29.5–31.5 cm (1111⁄2–121⁄2 in)

Rare to uncommon in humid montane forest and, rarely, in lowlands. Always has chestnut under tailcoverts and tips to retraces, and some yellow on bill.

Northern cyanolaemus (south to San Martín), generally at higher elevations (1200–2500 m), has blue throat and less yellow on bill.

Southern populations (atrogularis, dimidiatus) generally occur lower (350–1650 m) and have black throats.

Similar Chestnut-tipped Toucanet has all-dark bill, white throat, and green undertail coverts.

VOICE Call (cyanolaemus) a long series of grinding grunts “grra grra grra…” or barking yaps “yak yak yak yak yak.” Atrogularis additionally has a relatively non-grating series of high, quiet yaps, similar to a puppy.

Notes shorter and sharper than those of Chestnut-tipped, less unpleasant than those of Blue-banded Toucanet.

YELLOW-BROWED TOUCANET Aulacorhynchus huallagae 38–44 cm (15–17 1 ⁄4 in)

Rare and local in tall humid montane forest on east slope of Andes in north central Peru, 2000–2600 m. Geographically replaces the similar Blue-banded Toucanet; Yellow-browed differs by prominent white base to mandible; yellow under tail coverts; and indistinct yellowish super ciliary. Chestnut tipped Toucanet of lower elevations has all-dark bill, no red on rump, and green under tail coverts. VOICE Call a series of harsh grunts: “rehh rehh rehh….” ENDEMIC

BLUE-BANDED TOUCANET Aulacorhynchus coeruleicinctis 38–43 cm (15–17 in)

Fairly common in humid montane forest on east slope of Andes of central and southern Peru, 1300–2500 m, locally up to 3100 m. Gray bill has creamy tip and lacks white border at base; also note red rump band, pale blue breast band (not easily seen in field), and greenish under tail coverts. Iris usually pale, but sometimes (or always?) dark in south central Peru (Ayacucho and Cuzco). Cf. Chestnut-tipped Toucanet. VOICE Call a series of harsh, rattled barks: “grra grra grra grra….”Generally more harsh and unpleasant-sounding than the voices of other green toucanets.
